The house will come crumbling down for the unprepared.
As you enter the holiday season and a time of family gatherings, I wanted to share some thoughts with you more about family and less about business.  A lot of these concepts are from the book, Beating the Midas Curse by Perry Cochell and Rod Zeeb.   The book does a nice job of describing a foundational component to a lot of our work with family business owners and their families; namely shared values and their application in long-term planning for your business and your family.

Are you running your business, or is your business running you?
I love “To-Do” lists and prioritizing activities.  

But then again, I'm a dork!

These are often missing in family farm businesses for a variety of reasons.  Being too busy farming is often a common response.  Project planning tends to be a day-to-day decision on which fire to put out first.  A situation characterized by the question, “Is your business running you or are you running your business?”

Less than 45% of family farm businesses stick to a detailed budget and that less than 29% of farm businesses have a written business plan.

Farmers are too busy farming and don’t have time to plan, yet all the “experts” call for it and complicate things further by calling everything a farmer has to do as “planning”.  Strategic planning, operational planning, marketing plans, business planning, estate planning, family planning, retirement planning.  Whoa!

All I know is…Planning Is Not Optional.
